Information Sessions Offered For Healthcare Interpreters Program
Information sessions for a new Healthcare Interpreters Certificate training program sponsored by Samford University and En Espanol advocacy organization will be held June 9 and 10.
The program to train bilingual and bicultural students to develop awareness, knowledge and skills necessary for effective language interpretation in healthcare settings begins in September.
Information sessions will be held Wednesday, June 9, at 12:15 p.m. at Children’s Harbor building, 1616 6th Avenue South, and Thursday, June 10, at 5 p.m. in Samford’s Sciencenter room 109.
The first of its kind in the Southeast, the nine-month program will include course work held one evening each week and on Saturdays. Classes will meet at Samford. Cost for the program is $1,995.
Through academic preparation, practical skills training and service in community healthcare settings, certificate candidates will learn roles and responsibilities of a healthcare interpreter, knowledge of common medical conditions, treatments and procedures, language and cultural nuances for specific communities and application of interpreting skills in English and Spanish.
To qualify for admission, students must have earned at least a high school diploma and be bilingual in English and Spanish. Pretests will be administered to determine language proficiency.
