Samford Institute for Teaching Excellence Set for July 20-23

Samford University's Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education and Professional Studies will host the 17th annual Samford Summer Institute for Teaching Excellence (SSITE) July 20-23.

The program is open to teachers, counselors and administrators from k-12 schools. Each participant will receive 24 hours of professional development credit or 3 CEU credits. Registration deadline is July 14.

Specialists in various fields will speak on current educational issues and future trends. Keynote speaker Merrill Harmin, director of Inspiring Strategy Institute, White Plains, N.Y., will discuss "Four Steps to Great Teaching." Harmin is the author of seven books, including Values and Teaching and Strategies to Inspire Active Learning. Other speakers and topics are:

Frank Siccone, staff development specialist and author of books on self-esteem and responsibility, student motivation and education leadership, "Building Respect and Responsibility." Kathleen McConnell Fad, consultant in behavior disorders/emotional disturbance, "Practical Ideas that Work for Disruptive, Defiant or Difficult Behaviors."

Tonya Perry, University of Alabama at Birmingham education professor, 2001 Alabama Teacher of the Year and specialist in effective teaching strategies and supportive learning communities, "Professional Issues."

B. Lee Hurren, University of North Alabama education professor and former stand-up comic, "Humor in the Classroom."

In addition, breakout sessions will deal with 23 different topics, including understanding students' non-verbal language, affordable technology for the classroom, education law and preparing for the writing assessment test.

Registration fee is $125. Cost includes workshop materials, opening reception, three breakfasts, two lunches, snacks, T-shirt and tote bag.

All sessions will be held at the HealthSouth Conference center. Participants should make their own housing arrangements.
