Posted by Mary Wimberley on 1999-04-30

Charles L. Overby, chairman and CEO of The Freedom Forum, an independent foundation dedicated to First Amendment and media issues, will keynote Samford University's annual Media Day Tuesday, May 4. The Pulitzer Prize winner will speak at 10 a.m. in Divinity Hall Room 302 North. The public is invited.

Overby's topic will be "The First Amendment: A Free Press and a Fair Press." He is expected to touch on topics related to The Auburn Plainsman newspaper, and Alabama high schools and censorship.

Overby, a former Pulitzer Prize-winning editor in Jackson, Miss., oversees The Freedom Forum's office and programs on five continents. He is also chairman and chief executive officer of two affiliate organizations: The Newseum, a popular attraction in the Washington, D.C., area, and the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

An afternoon panel discussion on First Amendment freedoms will be held in Beeson Center for the Healing Arts Room 112 at 1 p.m.

Panelists are Birmingham media attorney Holly Barnard, Auburn Plainsman editor Lee Davidson, The Birmingham News editor emeritus Jim Jacobson, and Overby. Samford journalism major Jared Shull will moderate.
