McWhorter Pharmacy Alum Devereux To Receive National Award

Samford University pharmacy graduate Patrick Devereux has been named an awardee in the 2012 Pharmacy Today One to One Patient Counseling Recognition Program by the American Pharmacists Association. The award will be presented Saturday, March 10, 2012 in New Orleans, La., at the association’s annual meeting.
Devereux, a 2005 Pharm.D. graduate from Birmingham, was nominated as an outstanding pharmacist who has performed exceptional one-to-one patient counseling, resulting in better health, superior communication, and improved outcomes for patients. He is both a certified diabetes educator and pharmacist, focusing on patient-centered care, with advanced services in diabetes and other areas.
“I liked the personal interaction between the pharmacists and patients,” recalls Devereux, who identified his particular niche after entering the professional curriculum at Samford’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy. He received the school’s Shaddix Award earlier this year in recognition of a graduate who has made a difference in pharmacy within five years of graduation.
Devereux is vice president of clinical services at Family Medical Serices, Inc., and managing pharmacist at the company’s Bessemer location. He is president–elect of Rotary International’s Shades Mountain Sunrise Club, and is also active in the Jefferson County and Alabama Pharmacy associations, National Community Pharmacists Association and the American Association of Diabetes Educations. He is also a member of the pharmacy school’s newly formed leadership team.
