Samford Wind Ensemble Chosen for Regional Honor

Posted by Mary Wimberley on 2001-01-31

The Samford University Wind Ensemble has been invited to perform at the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) Southern Division Conference in Louisville, Ky., on Friday, Feb. 9.

The 46-member ensemble will perform during the four-day meeting at the Kentucky International Convention Center. Samford music professor Dr. Jon S. Remley is director.

The invitation is by audition only. The Samford Wind Ensemble is the first college group from Birmingham ever selected to perform at the conference. The Florida State University Symphonic Band is the only other college band invited to the 2001 conference.

The conference will be attended by music educators from elementary through college level who are members of the 11-state Southern Division.

The Samford ensemble will play four selections: Tempered Steel by Charles Rochester Young, They Hung Their Harps in the Willows by W. Francis McBeth, Synergistic Suite by Samford music professor Dr. James Jensen, and March from Symphonic Metamorphosis by Paul Hindemith.

The Wind Ensemble regularly performs at high schools and Baptist churches in Alabama and neighboring states. Its next campus performance is Saturday, April 7.
