Alabama Governor's School Begins at Samford on July 8

High school students from 28 counties will arrive at Samford University Sunday, July 8 for Alabama Governor's School. A total of 81 rising high school seniors will attend the two-week honors program for academically talented students. Opening ceremony is Sunday at 3:15 p.m. in Reid Chapel.

Participants will each select a major area of coursework as well as a minor course. Topics include the legal process, research science, television news production, Alabama heroes, Birmingham's urban geography, medical implant technology and others. First-time course offerings are Web design and business marketing.

A special Insights dinner on Tuesday, July 10, will feature Dr. Susan Allen, AIDS researcher who will discuss her work as founder of an AIDS clinic in Rwanda.

Governor's School participants from previous years are invited to participate in the AGS "Olympics" on Sunday afternoon, July 15.

Other activities include a volleyball tournament, talent show, a dance, and trips to the Birmingham Museum of Art, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.

Closing ceremony will be Friday morning, July 20. This is the 15th year for Samford to sponsor the Alabama Governor's School.
