Posted by Mary Wimberley on 2001-08-24

Samford University will begin its 160th year when fall semester classes start on Monday, Aug. 27. About 800 freshmen and other new students will join some 3,710 returning students.

"This is an exciting time of year when students come back from all over the world where they have been working and traveling, and when first-timers begin their university experience," said Samford president Thomas E. Corts.

"Faculty return with batteries re-charged. All our investment of time, energy and money focuses on the students--who are, indeed, our reason-for-being."

Dr. Corts will address students and facluty at the opening convocation of the fall semester Tuesday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. in Seibert Hall. The Buchanan award for teaching excellence will be given to an outstanding faculty member.

Samford students will note several major construction projects that were completed during the summer months. These include a $27 million science building, a $6 million transformation in Beeson University Center's kitchen and dining hall areas, and a $1.3 million renovation to Smith Hall, which houses 195 male freshmen.
