Samford University alumni and students will observe Homecoming Oct. 26-28. Pre-Homecoming activities will begin Thursday, Oct. 25, with a 6 p.m. parade through downtown Homewood. The event will celebrate Homewood's 75th anniversary and Samford's 160th anniversary.

Major events include dedication of the new $27 million SCIENCENTER on Friday evening, Oct. 26, 5-8 p.m. Visitors can tour the new planetarium and conservatory. Dr. Kathie Olsen, chief scientist, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, will speak at 5 p.m.

Also on Friday, Better Than Ezra rock band will perform at 9 p.m. in Wright Center Concert Hall.

Saturday events include a breakfast for alumni from the Class of 1951 and earlier, children's carnival, SCIENCENTER open house and volleyball game. Alumni and families can pre-register to work on a Habitat for Humanity building project. Samford graduate Dr. Margaret Armbrester, editor of Alabama Governors: a Political History of the State, and former Gov. Albert Brewer will speak during a "Live at the Library" program at 10 a.m.

Barbecue lunch will be followed by a 1 p.m. football game against University of Tennessee-Martin. The alumni of the year and the Homecoming court will be presented at halftime.

New events this year include a post-game Metro College reunion at about 4:30 p.m. in Dwight Beeson Hall lobby. A Class of 1951 Golden Reunion Dinner will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday. Reunions will also be held throughout the weekend for various student organizations and for class years ending in one or six.

Sunday events include a fellowship breakfast at 8:30 a.m., and a worship service at 9:30 a.m. in Beeson Divinity Chapel. Dr. William Hull, Class of 1951, university professor and former Samford provost, will deliver the sermon.

A service of gratitude will be held at Ruhama Baptist Church at 2 p.m. The church was attended by many faculty, staff and students when Samford, then Howard College, was located in East Lake. Lee and Catherine Allen, who were married at the church in 1963, will preside.

All events are free except the barbecue lunch, golden reunion dinner, concert and football game. For information or tickets, call the Samford alumni office at 877-782-5867 or (205) 726-2807 or E-mail alumni@samford.edu.
