Nursing 90th Anniversary Celebration to Culminate at Homecoming

Posted by Philip Poole on 2012-09-18

Samford University's Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing will celebrate 90 years of excellence in nursing education Oct. 12 and 13 as part of the university's annual homecoming weekend.  In addition to university Homecoming activities, nursing alumni and friends will gather together for three large events and multiple individual class reunions.

The goal of the 90th anniversary events is to reconnect with a record number of Moffett Nurses by offering something enjoyable for alumni and families of all ages, acrroding to Katie Stripling, director of advancement and alumni affairs for the nursing school.  With that in mind, the school will host the Cap and Cape Society Lunch, the Family Fun Day and Barbecue, and the Living Legacy Gala.

The Cap and Cape Society Lunch will take place on Friday, Oct. 12 in the Pete Hanna Center South Colonnade.  Beginning at 11:00 a.m., the luncheon will honor alumni and traditions from the classes of 1922-73.  There is no cost to attend this event, but advance reservations are required.  Following the luncheon, alumni from the Birmingham Baptist Hospital classes of 1959, 1962, 1963 and 1967 will gather for individual reunions.

On Saturday, Oct. 13, the school will build on the annual Homecoming barbecue to include a Family Fun Zone for children of all ages.  Starting at 11:30 a.m., alumni, friends and their families will gather at the Dwight and Lucille Beeson Center for Healing Arts for food, fellowship and fun.  Some of the activities include a video game truck, inflatables, carnival games, cookie decorating and more!  Lunch will be served on the Center for Healing Arts Plaza and the Family Fun Zone will be located in the adjacent parking lot.  The cost to attend is $5 per person for lunch and advanced reservations are requested.  There will be reserved parking in close proximity to the Center for Healing Arts and reservations are required to obtain a parking pass.

Prior to the barbecue, the classes of 1957, 1958, 1962, 1973 and 2012 will gather for breakfast and individual class reunions.  Class representatives will provide additional information.

The weekend will culminate with the Living Legacy Gala at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13 at The Club in Birmingham.  Stripling said the event  is "an elegant evening celebrating the school's rich history and  honoring distinguished alumni with Living Legacy Awards."  The Living Legacy Awards recognize Birmingham Baptist Hospital and Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing alumni who have perpetuated Mrs. Moffett's legacy through their contributions to the mental, physical or spiritual well-being of others.  Tickets are $75 per person and reservations should be made by Sept. 28.  Tables and sponsorships are also available.
