Bruce Winter to Deliver Biblical Studies Lectures

WinterNoted theologian Bruce Winter will present this year's Biblical Studies Lectures Feb. 5-7 at Samford University's Beeson Divinity School. The theme of the lectures is "Paul's Pastoral Paradigms for Preachers."

Winter's topics will be "Three Out of Four? A 1st and 21st Century Score," on Feb. 5; "Strategy 1 - 'Presenting Causes, Inevitable Consequences and Paul's Corrections' Curing the Causes for Christians in 1 Corinthians and Us," on Feb. 6; "and Strategy 2 - 'Addressing the Underlying Causes and Critical Corrections," on Feb. 7.

All lectures will be in A. Gerow Hodges Chapel at 11 a.m. and are free to the public.

Winter is research professor and the director of the Institute of Early Christianity at Queensland Theological College, St. Lucia, Australia. He formerly served as principal of the College and Warden of Tyndale House in Cambridge.

"Dr. Bruce Winter has long been a frequent visitor and beloved professor at Beeson Divinity School," said Timothy F. George, Beeson Divinity School dean. "He is a world-renowned scholar who has written widely in the area of Greco-Roman society and biblical backgrounds. He has a unique ability to bring together the deepest insights of Scripture with practical ministry contexts."

A luncheon will be held Feb. 6 at 12 p.m. The luncheon is $7.50 per person and requires an advance reservation. To register for the luncheon, call (205) 726-2731.

The Biblical Studies Lectures are one of three annual lectureships hosted by Beeson to enrich the spiritual life of the community and enhance the educational experience of students, according to James Pounds, director of extension programs.  The lectures are presented in alternate years by Old and New Testament scholars.
