Freshmen Arrive Thursday for ´Connections'

Samford University freshmen will arrive Thursday morning (Aug. 21) for "move in" to residence halls and four days of "Connections" events that are designed to acquaint the new students with campus life.

Thursday at 3 p.m., students and parents will attend a Samford Family Welcome program with president Andrew Westmoreland in Wright Center Concert Hall.

Friday at 10 a.m. in Wright Center, freshmen will attend a lecture by Samford biology professor Dr. Larry Davenport related to the summer reading assignment, Field Notes from a Catastrophe by Elizabeth Kolbert. The book addresses human contributions to global warming.

Following the lecture, students will discuss the topic in small groups led by faculty members.

Events for new students on Saturday include a Bulldog Yell, the first pep rally, on Talbird Circle at 3:30 p.m., dinner at various Birmingham restaurants and movie at the Alabama Theatre.

On Sunday, freshmen will attend a special worship serve at 10:15 a.m. in Reid Chapel, and enjoy ice cream at the president's home in the afternoon.

Samford upperclassmen arrive on Sunday in anticipation of fall semester classes, which begin on Monday, Aug. 25.
