Divinity, Religion Students Honored

Graduate and undergraduate students in divinity and religion programs at Samford University have received awards for outstanding achievement.

Students in Samford's Beeson Divinity School were cited for achievement in various areas of study during recent chapel programs.

Honorees included: Justin Nalls of Birmingham, James Earl Massey preaching award; Ronald Sterling of Pelham, pastoral ministry award; Jim Dewey of Moody, historical and theological studies award; Nathan White of Wichita, Kan., Biblical studies award; Nancy Carroll of Birmingham, most outstanding Master of Theological Studies degree student; Grant Taylor of Johnson City, Tenn., most outstanding Master of Divinity degree student; Leslie Ann Jones of Iuka, Miss., W. M. Todd Biblical languages award.

Dr. Allen P. Ross of Birmingham, professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Beeson, received the Fisher Humphreys Teaching Award. The award honors Humphreys, who retires this year after 40 years in theological education, the last 18 on the Beeson faculty.

Undergraduate students in Samford's Department of Religion were honored at an April 28 awards dinner.

Award recipients included: Tessa King of Fernandina Beach, Fla., Vernon Davison award for excellence in Biblical languages; Tiffany Stubbs of Birmingham, Talley-Windsor award for performance and promise in preparation for a church-related vocation; Justin Gambrell of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., William Cowley award for excellence in scholarship, leadership and commitment to ministry; Katherine Herring of Madison, Carlton F. Whirley award for commitment to learning and missions; and Ellen Donze of Birmingham and Jacob Chambliss of Birmingham, co-winners of the Herman Ross Arnold award recognizing Christian humility, unselfish service and improvement of the mind.
