Powell Recognized as Samford VIP at Philanthropy Day Luncheon

Posted by Kara Kennedy on 2010-11-17

Samford University will honor alumnus Greg Powell Nov. 18 as a VIP (Volunteer In Philanthropy). Powell, president and CEO of Birmingham-based fi-Plan Partners, will be honored at the Alabama Association of Fundraising Professionals’ annual Philanthropy Day luncheon.

For more than 20 years, the Birmingham community has come together to honor organizations, corporations and citizens who dedicate their time and talent to area charitable organizations.

Powell was selected because he made a decision early on in his career to give back to Samford University and to stay involved with the students, faculty and staff to ensure that current students’ experiences are as rewarding as his was when he was a student, according to W. Randall Pittman, Samford’s vice president for advancement.

“I am grateful not only for the education I received at Samford, but also for the relationships I formed with people that I remain longtime friends with to this day,” Powell said.

Powell recently completed a two-year term as president of the Samford Alumni Association. Through the years, he also has been chair of Samford’s Brock School of Business Advisory Board, a member of the Samford Athletics Foundation and an ex officio member of the Samford Board of Overseers.   In 2009, Powell was recognized as the Brock School of Business alumnus of the year.

Powell has worked in the financial industry for more than 20 years. Prior to starting fi-Plan Partners, he worked for 17 years for a national financial organization. He also is credited for creating the financial management tool, Your Financial House.

In addition to his work with Samford, Powell is a volunteer with Aldridge Botanical Gardens, Alabama Reach Out and Read, Special Equestrians and Camp Smile-A-Mile.

Powell and his wife, Peggy, live in Hoover, Ala., with their three children: Sara, Audrey and Lydia.
