Posted by Mary Wimberley on 2007-04-06

Samford University Theatre will present the Stephen Sondheim musical, "Company," April 19-22. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on April 19-21 and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 22 in Samford's Harrison Theatre, Swearingen Hall.

The play, with music and lyrics by Sondheim and book by George Furth, concerns the relationships between Bobby, a single man, and the five married couples who are his best friends, and his three girlfriends.

"Bobby" is played by Samford junior theatre major Matt Godfrey of Hoover.

An honest, witty and sophisticated look at relationships, Company features an energetic score containing many of Sondheim's best-known songs. Besides the title song, memorable tunes in the show include "The Little Things You Do Together," "Another Hundred People" and "Being Alive."

The original production of Company, which opened on Broadway in 1970 (starring Decatur, Ala., native Dean Jones), earned 12 Tony Awards.

Samford theatre professor Mark Castle directs the production. Samford School of Performing arts dean Dr. Joseph Hopkins conducts the accompanying instrumental ensemble.

The cast includes Bob Becklean, Jordan Bondurant, Samantha Chambers, Erin Griffith, Haley Longino, Daniel P. Mills, Christina Myers, Lydia Myers, Sarah Simmons, Bobby Smith, Maggie Taylor and Andrew Westover.

Tickets are $10 adult, $7 senior adult and $5 student/child. For reservations call (205) 726-2853.

A gala pre-show brunch will be held on Sunday, April 22, at 12:30 p.m. in the Flag Colonnade room of Samford's Beeson University Center For brunch reservation and ticket information, call (205) 726-2951.
