Communication Workshop For High School Students is September 14

Samford University will host its annual journalism/mass communication workshop for high school students and media advisors Thursday, Sept. 14.

The event is sponsored by Samford's journalism/mass communication department with funding support from the Alabama Press Association Education Foundation.

The program will feature sessions led by professionals representing a variety of communication-related careers.

Students and advisors will learn about writing, editing and producing for print, broadcast and web outlets. They can receive professional critiques of their work and insight into various careers.

NBC 13 anchor/reporter Fran Curry will be the morning's featured speaker. Her topic will be "Why I do what I do and what I wish I had known about it when I was younger."

Morning workshops will be led by Anna Velasco, reporter, The Birmingham News; Deborah Lowery, freelance magazine writer; Julie Keith, editor, Portico magazine; Ray Melick, sports columnist, The Birmingham News; and Scarlet Thompson, Alabama director of communications and marketing, American Cancer Society..

Afternoon sessions will feature Napo Monasterio, designer, The Birmingham News; Donovan Harris, director of art and production, Progressive Farmer; Garrett Lane, editor, SouthernAccents.com; Tamika Moore, photographer, The Birmingham News; and news anchor Devon Walsh, meteorologist Dennis Washington and sports anchor Rick Karle, all of Fox 6.

Registration check-in will begin at 8:15 a.m. in Dwight Beeson Hall lobby, with the opening program at 9 a.m. in the same building. Lunch will be available in the Samford food court or cafeteria. The program will conclude at 2 p.m.
