James R. Barnette, Associate Professor and Director of Preministerial Scholars

Dr. Barnette concentrates his research in the areas of preaching, Christian worship, and ministerial ethics. He received his B.A. from Samford University and his M.Div. and Ph.D. from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He has contributed to journals including Review and Expositor, Preaching, and Journal of the American Academy of Ministry. He is co-author of Homely Joys, a Collection of Prayers and Poems with his father, Dr. Henlee Barnette, a longtime professor at Southern Seminary. At Samford, Dr. Barnette teaches courses in Bible, Preaching, Christian Ministry, and Missions. He also oversees the Samford Preministerial Scholars program. Dr. Barnette also serves on staff at Brookwood Baptist Church as the Teaching Pastor. He is married to Deanna and has a daughter and a son. Their daughter currently attends Samford.

Shellyn Poole, Preministerial Scholars Coordinator

In addition to her duties as Preministerial Scholars Coordinator, Shellyn serves as Minister to Preschoolers and Childrens' Families at The Church at Shelby Crossings. Prior to that she served as Minister to Youth at Brookwood Baptist Church in Mountain Brook, Alabama. She has also served on staff for churches in Florida and Missouri. Shellyn received the Master of Religious Education degree from Southwestern Seminary, where she also served as Associate Director of Ministerial and Church Relations for four years.

Beth Gilbert, Administrative Assistant

Beth Gilbert was born in Anniston, AL. Her family moved to Birmingham when she was 18 months old and her dad was hired by the Birmingham Police Department. She and her husband have been married for 40 years and live in Odenville. They enjoy living in the country with their chocolate lab and all the numerous amenitites available to country living. All three of their children graduated from Samford, two of whom also earned their masters there. The oldest son is an attorney in Birmingham; the second son is a producer for Robinson and Adams in Homewood; and the third child is a girl who married a Samford grad. She teaches fifth grade in Vestavia. She and her husband have one daughter who is a delight to keep. "Every good and perfect gift cometh from the Lord." James 1:17. .
