“...To commemorate Samford's 45th and final season in historic Seibert Hall, the athletics department would like to have a school-record 4,500 fans in attendance for the pivotal OVC games...”
Samford University’s athletics department is promoting "Sell Out Seibert" for the Jan. 29 games against conference rival Murray State. The Samford women play at 5 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to set the all-time attendance record in the key Ohio Valley Conference matchups.
To commemorate Samford's 45th and final season in historic Seibert Hall, the athletics department would like to have a school-record 4,500 fans in attendance for the pivotal OVC games, according to Jay Roberson, associate director of athletics.
In 2007-08, the Samford basketball programs will move next door to the state-of-the-art, $32 million dollar Pete Hanna Arena.
The current attendance record of 4,240 was set Feb. 1, 2001, against former Atlantic Sun Conference rival Georgia State University.
Former Bulldog players and coaches will be honored at halftime as Samford remembers all of the good times and memories it has had in the 45 years of Seibert Hall, Roberson said. Seibert was home to Samford’s two men’s NCAA tournament teams, a holiday tournament for several years in the 1960s and has featured such promotions as “Fear the Window”—a reference to the huge windows on the south end of the gym.
Although Samford moved to the current campus in September 1957, the first game on the Homewood campus was not until December 1959. The make-shift gym that season was where the swimming pool is now located on the lower floor of Seibert Hall. Games during the 1957-58 season were played in Causey Gym on the old East Lake campus. Home games during 1958-59 were played at Birmingham’s Ramsey High School. The first game in the current Seibert Hall gym was Dec. 2, 1961, a 113-63 victory over Belhaven College. Prior to the start of the 2006-07 season, Samford’s all-time record in Seibert Hall was 344-167 (.673 percent).
Women’s basketball was added for the 1998-99 season, and the women’s teams have played every season in Seibert Hall. The all-time Seibert Hall record for the Bulldog women is 53-67 (.442 percent).
