Samford Grad to Represent Alabama

“... Well-wishers crowded the rotunda of the Dwight M. and Lucille S. Beeson Center for the Healing Arts Jan. 11 for a rousing send-off reception honoring Toole...”

Melinda TooleMelinda Toole, a 2006 Samford University graduate, will represent Alabama in the 2007 Miss America pageant Jan. 29 in Las Vegas.  The pageant will be televised live by CMT cable network at 8 p.m. EST.

Toole won the Miss Alabama last June, competing as Miss Samford.  Since 1989, 10 Samford students or graduates have been Miss Alabama, including 2002 alumna Deidre Downs, who went on to earn the Miss America 2005 crown.  Downs is now a medical student at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Well-wishers crowded the rotunda of the Dwight M. and Lucille S. Beeson Center for the Healing Arts Jan. 11 for a rousing send-off reception honoring Toole and hosted by Samford President Andrew Westmoreland, his wife Jeanna, and the Miss Alabama organization.

Westmoreland noted the strong relationship between the Miss Alabama pageant and Samford, which provides facilities for the pageant each June.  “And, of course, we are especially proud that one of our own is the reigning Miss Alabama,” he added.
