"... A great number of Samford alumni work as staff members for members of Congress, as well as in the White House and with other governmental and non-governmental agencies..."
Persevering through winter weather, Samford Alumni gathered at the famous Dubliner Irish pub in Washington, D.C. Jan. 17 to make new friends and network.
A great number of Samford alumni work as staff members for members of Congress, as well as in the White House and with other governmental and non-governmental agencies.
David Goodwin, Director of Alumni and Parents Programs, said recent Alumnae of the Year honoree Carol Guthrie `93 called and asked for help organizing the get-together. Goodwin obliged, locating alumni through university records and online networking sites. It's a challenging task, he said. "When an email address is no longer valid, we know we have some extra checking to do, so we can make sure alumni are aware of events and opportunities--we don’t want anyone to miss out.”
Jamie Gibson `03, and his wife moved to D.C. in summer 2007 and were excited to get a chance to visit with Samford alumni. “David Goodwin and I have been talking about getting the group together. "I’m glad this worked out, although I think the snow kept a few folks away.”
Guthrie noted that even in fine weather denizens of the capitol city might not make it to social events. “Just like other working professionals we have crazy schedules," she said. "Of course, Guthrie added, "when we are late or don’t make it, the reason often shows up on the news.”
Convenience of the meeting venue can be a make-or-break issue, of course, and Samford leaves the choice to the alumni. “In a city like Washington, we wanted someplace close to where many folks work, so Dubliner--just off Capitol Hill--was a great location," explained Guthrie,
Matt and Karen Lott `00, `01 couldn't attend for non-professional reasons—they were home with new twins James and Charlotte.
Samford's Alumni office hosted receptions and other social events in Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Mobile and Waco in Fall 2007. Events for Birmingham and other cities will soon be listed on Samford's Alumni page.“This is exactly the kind of event I hope we’ll have more of in the future, everywhere we have Samford Alumni, parents and friends,” Goodwin said.
