Honors: Students, Staff, Faculty Share Spotlight

Cumberland Trial Team Wins National Advocacy Title

A trial team from Samford University's Cumberland School of Law has claimed the national title in the 2008 American Association for Justice's student trial advocacy competition.

Team members Dillon Barker of Rogersville, Tenn., Lisha Li of Auburn, Julie McMakin of Huntsville and Anna Smith of Mobile defeated a South Texas College of Law team in the final round of competition held in West Palm Beach, Fla., April 6.

The Cumberland team defeated number-one ranked Temple University law school in the quarter-finals to advance to beat University of Richmond School of Law in the semi-final round.

The national competition culminates a series of regional eliminations that began with 224 teams vying nationwide.

Cumberland adjunct faculty member Mike Rasmussen is team coach.

Soccer Media Guide Receives National Recognition

Samford's 2007 Soccer Media Guide was ranked third in District 4 and 12th in the nation, it was announced Tuesday in the College Sports Information Directors of America's (CoSIDA) annual media guide competition.

Samford's third-place finish in District 4 trailed only the media guides from Kentucky and Tennessee. The publication's finish earned the school's highest ranking in women's soccer history. CoSIDA's District 4 encompasses all of the Division I universities located in Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama.
Samford also placed 12th in the nation out of 66 entries. BYU's media guide was named the best in the country, while Kentucky placed second and Kansas finished third.

Samford's 2007 Soccer Media Guide was written, edited and produced by assistant sports information director Zac Schrieber. Janica York Carter served as the Creative Services Director, while both Scott Camp and Monica Washington designed the layout of the media guide.

Samford's staff photographers Caroline Baird Summers and Ann Wade Parrish provided the photos for the annual publication.

The 2007 Samford Soccer Media Guide is a 92-page publication that showcases the Bulldogs' four-time Ohio Valley Conference champions. The yearly production includes biographical information of all of the players and coaches, as well as the school's record book and historical facts.
