The world-famous men’s choral group, The CenturyMen, will perform April 24 at Samford University. The 7:30 p.m. concert in the Wright Center Concert Hall is free and open to the public.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for Samford and this region to hear such a highly professional men’s choral group,” said Joseph Hopkins, Samford’s dean of performing arts. “It will be a wonderful evening musically and inspirationally.”
Since forming in 1969, The CenturyMen group has performed around the world. The organization currently has 142, although the name was derived from the original 100 members. Membership is by audition, and each member has at least one music degree and is active in a Baptist church or institution.
The group has several recordings and has been nominated for both Grammy and Dove awards.
Award-winning composer Buryl Red has been music director and conductor of The CenturyMen since the group was founded. He is best known in Baptist circles as composer of the groundbreaking Christian musical Celebrate Life.
The Samford appearance is part of the group’s 2007 tour. At least 11 current members are Samford graduates.
