Samford redshirt freshman running back Chris Evans was named the Ohio Valley Conference's Newcomer of the Week when the league announced its weekly honors on Sunday, September 16.

In Samford's 34-24 win over Presbyterian College on Sept. 14, Evans rushed 20 times for a career-high 174 yards and a touchdown. Evans sealed the win for the Bulldogs with a career-long 51-yard touchdown run with 3:46 to go in the game. For the game, Evans averaged 8.7 yards per carry. Evans also returned two kicks for a total of 67 yards.

On Sept. 4 Soccer forward Lauren Cook was named OVC's co-offensive player of the week.

True freshman Cook tallied an assist versus regionally-ranked Indiana Sept. 14 (2-1 loss) and scored Samford's thrilling game-winning overtime goal against High Point (2-1) Sept. 16. The Bulldogs' speedy attacker leads the OVC in goals (6), points (13) and game-winning goals (3) this season. The true freshman leads the conference in goals (6), points (13) and game-winning goals (3)
