"...'It's exciting for the coaches to pick us to win the league’..."
Samford's men's and women's basketball teams were picked to win their respective Ohio Valley Conference championships as the 11-team league held its annual Basketball Media Day October 11.
Samford's women's team received 12 of the 20 possible first-place votes and return four starters from last season's squad.
"It's exciting for the coaches to pick us to win the league," said Samford head women's basketball coach Mike Morris, 2005-06 OVC Coach of the Year. "Two years ago, we were picked to finish 10th in the league and now, for the first year ever, we will have outside sources, coaches, fans and media expecting a little more out of us."
The Samford men's team, the 2006 OVC tournament runner-up, received nine of the 20 possible first-place votes to claim the top spot in the OVC poll. The men's team also returns four starters.
"I think that being picked first is a compliment to our program," said Samford head men's basketball coach Jimmy Tillette, in his 10th season as the head coach at Samford. "We appreciate that and I think that it might also be considered a compliment to our style of play, but in the long run it all comes down to three days in March that really matter."
Both teams will open their 2006-07 campaigns on Nov. 10, with the men on the road against defending national champion Florida and the women on the road against Alabama.
