‘Affrilachian’ Author Finney To Speak Nov. 6

cover of The World is Round by Nikky FinneyAward-winning author Nikky Finney will visit Samford on Monday, November 6 as part of the Birmingham Area Consortium for Higher Education Visiting Writers Series. The event, free of charge and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in Divinity Hall North room 302.

Finney, raised in the fishing and farming community of Conway, South Carolina, became fascinated with the Black Arts Movement and emerged as a writer through her friendship with activist author and professor Toni Cade Bambara. Finney's books include On Wings Made of Gauze, Rice (winner of the PEN American Open Book Award in 1999,) Heartwood and, most recently, The World Is Round.

Finney currently is Associate Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Kentucky, and is a founding member of Affrilachian Poets, a community-based writing collective.
