Soccer Shines Again With Fourth Consecutive OVC Title, School Record

"... Two days after clinching the OVC title, the team made school history when a 0-0 draw against Southeast Missouri gave the Bulldogs a 6-0-3 record..."

Samford Soccer TeamThe Samford University soccer team clinched its fourth-consecutive Ohio Valley Conference regular-season championship on October 20 with a 2-1 double-overtime victory against the Eastern Illinois Panthers.

Samford's Geiger scored the game-winning goal in the 109th minute as she headed a Bohler entry pass into the back of the net. The dramatic score was Geiger's third of the season and the assist was Bohler's school-record 24th of her career.

With time running down in the second overtime period, Rebecca Bohler sent a pass into the middle of the Panthers' goalkeeping box and Sara Geiger, the Bulldogs' senior midfielder from Lilburn, Ga., came from the far side of the field and perfectly timed her jump to head the ball into the goal.

"This was a fantastic ending to a fantastic match," said Samford head coach Todd Yelton. "I'm so proud of our players for battling all night. I thought that our true character showed through and I really respect the blue-collar mentality that we played with out there."

Two days after clinching the OVC title, the team made school history when a 0-0 draw against Southeast Missouri gave the Bulldogs a 6-0-3 record.

"I think it's quite an accomplishment to make it through this conference without a loss," said Samford Yelton. "It's a very difficult stretch, for us especially, because we were the preseason favorite and had a target on our back. I'm very proud of our team and how they performed and I think that it speaks volumes about their character."

By winning the conference's regular-season title, the Bulldogs earned the right to host the 2006 OVC Tournament, Nov. 3-5. The team will face Southeast Missouri again tonight, Friday, Nov. 3, in the second of two OVC Tournament semifinal matches. The winners of both matches will face off for the OVC Tournament championship at Samford (2 p.m. this Sunday, Nov. 5,) and an automatic berth in the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
