Earth Day Events Will Include Booths, Art, Music, Noted Speakers

Samford’s 2004 Earth Day celebrations on April 21 and 22 will feature diverse student and faculty presentations and lectures by Alabama Commissioner of Conservation M. Barnett Lawley and Peter Illyn, founder of Restoring Eden: Christians for Environmental Stewardship.

Lawley will speak in Samford’s Planetarium at 2 p.m. on April 21. Illyn, whose organization is dedicated to living out the biblical mandate to "speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves" (Proverbs 31:8) as advocates for natural habitats, wild species and indigenous cultures, will speak in the Earth Day convocation at 10 a.m. in Reid Chapel.

Faculty and students will be in Ben Brown Plaza from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. , staffing booths that link their academic specialties to the concerns of environmental stewardship. As they inform, the participants will be competing for a variety of awards, including:

  • Best Presentation on the Local Environment
  • Best of Event
  • Best Use of Theme
  • Greatest Organizational Support
  • Most Informative
  • Most Interactive
  • Most Creative
  • Art Awards (1st, 2nd, 3rd)

As in last year’s celebrations, various off-campus environmental organizations will be represented among the displays in Ben Brown Plaza .

Other Samford Earth Day activities will include:

  • Earth Day-themed student art exhibit on the second floor of University Library, all day
  • Film on the Cahaba River in the Sciencenter Planetarium, 2-3 p.m.
  • Earth Day concert by the Samford Wind Ensemble in Ben Brown Plaza, 4-5 p.m.
  • Presentation of Earth Day awards in Ben Brown Plaza, 4:30 p.m.
