Samford's 2005 Earth Day celebrations begin April 18, conclude April 21 and feature a variety of activities, including special lectures by Stephanie Paulsell, associate dean of Harvard Divinity School; Peter Illyn, founder of

Restoring Eden: Christians for Environmental Stewardship; and Alabama naturalist Doug Phillips.

Paulsell will deliver the Marie Fowler NeSmith Lecture in Christianity, Women, and Leadership Studies in Hodges Chapel (Beeson Divinity School) at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 18.

Illyn, whose organization is dedicated to living out the biblical mandate to "speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves" (Proverbs 31:8) as advocates for natural habitats, wild species and indigenous cultures, will speak in the Earth Day convocation at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 19 in Reid Chapel.

Phillips, originator, producer, and host of the popular Alabama Public Television series "Discovering Alabama," will speak at University Library on Tuesday, April 19 at 3 p.m.

From 10 a.m.–2 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2005, faculty and students will be in Ben Brown Plaza, staffing booths that link their academic specialties to the concerns of environmental stewardship. Various off-campus environmental organizations also will be represented among the displays in Ben Brown Plaza .

Other events during the week include a display of Earth-related student artwork, Vulcan Material Adventure Series presentations on Peru and Mt. Everest, an open-air concert by the Samford Wind Ensemble and an IMAX movie presentation in Samford's Planetarium.

All events are free of charge and open to the public.
