Reed Named Interim Business Dean

Reed, who was named Alabama Professor of the Year in 1994 and recently was appointed Margaret Gage Bush University Professor, began teaching at Samford in 1981 after a successful 15-year career in industry.

Professor Marlene M. Reed has been named acting dean of Samford’s School of Business. On August 18 Reed replaced Dean Carl Gooding, who resigned earlier this summer to accept a teaching position at Jacksonville State University. Reed will have primary administrative responsibilities for the School of Business until a new dean is selected.

Reed, who was named Alabama Professor of the Year in 1994 and recently was appointed Margaret Gage Bush University Professor, began teaching at Samford in 1981 after a successful 15-year career in industry. For many years she also has shared her economics and entrepreneurship expertise in the emerging democracies of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union.

“We are fortunate to have a person with Dr. Reed’s experience and skills to serve in this interim capacity,” said Samford Provost J. Bradley Creed. “I look forward to working with her in providing guidance and support to the School of Business during this time of transition.”

The School of Business, one of eight academic colleges and schools at Samford, had 476 undergraduate and graduate students, and 20 full-time faculty during the 2002-03 academic year. It is accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business [AACSB], the premier accrediting agency and service organization for schools of business.
