Dr. Paul Blanchard's fieldwork not only helped the vermilion darter survive. He thinks it improved his teaching. His students agree. Their support helped make Blanchard winner of the 2000 John H. Buchanan Award for Teaching Excellence.

NASCAR racing grows in popularity for a simple reason: excitement. "It's 43 guys driving 200 miles an hour inches apart for 500 miles," says Brett Shelton '87. The Samford business graduate is the new general manager of Talladega Superspeedway.

Genome Research Yields Quick Returns
Genetics research may seem abstract, but its impact is seen daily, says Brook Craven Young '96. The Samford biology major got a quick introduction to the field, working as a research associate for pioneering geneticist Craig Venter's firm.
