During the first week of December 1957, the basketball game between Howard College and Birmingham-Southern was being played in the gym on the old campus, even though the college had already moved to the new campus.

Prior to our going to the game, Tom and I had walked to Sherman Oak where he officially proposed to me (he had asked me several times before). I said, "Yes!" and Tom slipped a beautiful engagement ring on my finger!

Even though we attended the ball game, I cannot tell you 43 years later who won. In addition, we caused a distraction among those sitting near us since all the girls wanted to see my ring. We were married the following August. God has richly blessed not only our marriage and family (a son and daughter plus five grandchildren), but also our ministry. Tom served as pastor of churches in Alabama, North Carolina and Virginia before becoming Area Missionary for Western North Carolina with the NC Baptist State Convention, and I taught students in Alabama and North Carolina.

I wonder how many other girls received engagement rings under Sherman Oak.
