Overcoming Years of Bitterness
Pastor Earl Stallings opened his Birmingham church to black visitors in 1963 and ultimately lost his job because of disagreements with segregationists. He returned to Birmingham in May to receive an honorary doctorate from Samford. “I felt the bitterness of 37 years begin to lift from my soul,” he said of the experience.

New Arts and Sciences Dean
New deans take the helm this summer in arts and sciences (Dr. David W. Chapman), nursing (Dr. Nena F. Sanders) and law (John L. Carroll). They join another new arrival, business dean Carl W. Gooding, announced earlier this year.


Samford's Kelly Jones Claims Miss Alabama Title
Five months after being hospitalized for toxic shock syndrome, Samford graduate Kelly Jones '99 was crowned Miss Alabama in June.


The Business of Jets
Former Samford debater Dana Arnold '71 accepted his "dream job" with Learjet sales in 1989. Today, he's responsible for business jet sales to Fortune 1000 companies for Bombardier Aerospace, the world’s third-largest air transportation company.


Picturing Samford's History
A new pictorial history of Samford is off the press this summer, just in time for the University’s 160th anniversary. The volume features almost 200 photographs from the school’s three campuses.

A Conference for All Sports
Samford has joined the Ohio Valley Conference, unifying all 17 intercollegiate sports under one league banner. The move is effective no later than June 1, 2003. Until the move, Samford remains a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
