James A. Auchmuty Lecture
J. Brent Walker, executive director of the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty, will present the 2014 Auchmuty Lecture on the campus of Samford University, February 20, 2014. The Baptist Joint Committee’s mission is to defend and extend God-given religious liberty for all, furthering the Baptist heritage that champions the principle that religion must be freely exercised, neither advanced nor inhibited by government. The Baptist Joint Committee, primarily an education and advocacy organization, is a leading voice in Washington, D.C., fighting to uphold the historic Baptist principle of religious freedom. It stands guard at the intersection of church and state, defending the first freedom of the First Amendment.
Walker is both a member of the Supreme Court Bar and an ordained minister. A native of Charleston, West Virginia, Walker holds B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Florida, a J.D. from Stetson University College of Law, and Master of Divinity from Southern Seminary in Louisville, Ky. Having taught 10 years as an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center, he has, since 2003, served as an adjunct professor at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. Walker received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from the John Leland Center for Theological Studies in 2013.
The lecture will be held in Reid Chapel during convocation at 10:00 am. The James A. Auchmuty Lecture is named in honor of Dr. Jim Auchmuty, Emeritus Pastor of Shades Crest Baptist Church in Birmingham. The annual lecture features scholars of note, seminary professors, ministers and other persons with particular insights to offer on the subject of leadership.
