Women In Ministry: Day Apart
The next Day Apart will be Monday, March 2, 2015 at Aldridge Gardens in Hoover, Alabama. The retreat leader, Valerie Bridgeman, is the founder and CEO of Woman Preach!, Inc., a non-profit organization that brings women preachers into full prophetic voice around issues of equality and justice both in the pulpit and in the public arena. Their mission is to produce a network of preaching women and men who will use their voice in service to the gospel of Jesus Christ, especially as it relates to concerns of equality and justice. Valerie earned her masters of divinity from Austin Presbyterian Seminary and her Ph.D in Biblical Studies from Baylor University. Valerie is a published and award-winning poet, a visual artist, jazz dancer and stage performer.
Gateway to Hope, Birmingham; Veterans Moral Injury Conference
The Resource Center for Pastoral Excellence at Samford University and Samaritan Counseling Centers of Greater Birmingham, will host “Gateway to Hope Birmingham,” a conference on ministry to veterans. The day-long event will be held at Samford University on March 17, 2015, in the Jane H. Brock Recital Hall from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The conference will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and resources related to helping clergy, congregations, and communities work together to meet unique needs of veterans and their families. While all vets face challenges in the years following their service, recently deployed veterans face special challenges.
The program will include presentations by military chaplains, a professor of philosophy and ethics, and pastoral care specialists. The challenge of “moral injury,” a diagnosis common among many recently returned vets, will be among the topics addressed. Keynote speakers are Chaplain (MG) Doug Carver, (Retired) U.S. Army; Former Chief of Chaplains for U.S. Army, currently Chaplain Coordinator, North American Mission Board, S.B.C. and The Rev. Dr. Coleman Baker, Program Manager of Soul Repair, Brite Divinity School and Professor of Biblical Studies, Texas Christian University, Forth Worth, Texas. Other presenters are Dr. Amy Stevens, LPC (retired Navy), Dr. Dennis Sansom, Professor of Philosophy and Ethics, Samford University. Panel facilitators are Chaplain (BG) Carlton Fisher, Dr. Rodney Teague, Deborah Owen, Dr. Joanna Williamson-Abram, and Joy Germanos.
The cost of the event is $25.00 per person and includes lunch and refreshments, student discount rate is $10.00 The Samaritan Counseling Centers of Birmingham will offer two CEU credit hours for an additional fee of $10.00 Register at eve.samford.edu under one of the following options: Registration, Student/Military Registration, CEU Registration.
