Cathedral in Eskilstuna, Sweden

At left is the Cathedral in Eskilstuna.   On September 9 I went there for Sunday services, where surprisingly there were only three people in a room for 500. Hummm! Nevertheless, it's a nice building.

Cap'n Ronnie

Just to prove that I'm really here in Sweden, take a look at Captain Ron.  My latest deal was to barter the old greenhouses on Russell Hall for a new-ish yacht here in Sweden.

Island near Gotenberg off south coast of Sweden
On my latest trip to the west coast of Sweden, I spent one day touring the city of Gotenberg and interacting with a group in the Department of Physiology in a discussion of environmental androgens.  The Gotenberg botannical gardens has an exceptional greenhouse with 4000 species of tropical and semitropical plants.  There was even a room of southeastern USA species -- surroundings that made me feel at home.

Birch forest near Gotenberg, Sweden
I also spent two days on a small island off the west coast of Sweden near Gotenberg.  Typical of the larger islands here is the birch forest, yet just around the bend is a pine forest, then a juniper forest, and then outcroppings of bare rock.

Edible mushrooms

Amongst the mosses, blueberries, and lingonberries are edible mushrooms.  Because of the lack of rain since July, the mushrooms are extremely scarce. However, we did pick and eat a half liter. Can Larry identify these mushrooms? Am I still alive?

Per Karsnas' cottage near Gotenberg, Sweden

We spent the night in this small cottage, which is owned by Per Karsnas, the chair of Biology/Chemistry.  (Hummm, one chair and two departments!)  I see why he works Monday to Thursday noon in the department and spends Thursday to Monday on this island.

Ancient stone walls on island near Gotenberg
Hold it up, Ronnie!  There is evidence of humans from centuries past on this pristine island.  The stone walls guard the gardens from ocean spray and wind.
