Canoe Trip Down the Cahaba River by Samford's Senior Biology Seminar Students

The Cahaba River

The Biology Senior Seminar class led by Dr. Betsy Dobbins and Dr. Robert Stiles took a trip to the Cahaba River on Saturday, February 12, 2005, at the Bibb/Shelby County line. The class canoed down to the junction of the Cahaba River and the mouth of Shades Creek at the former site of the Marval Slab. The purpose of the trip was to introduce students to the river system, the fish in the river system, water quality, issues impacting the general watershed and water quality, biodiversity of the river, and general fun on the water. Several students took water, soil, and fish samples during the canoe trip. These samples were taken to be used as a part of the research work for the students' thesis papers.
