Imagine paddling down the Cahaba River in the early morning sunlight as the mist rises off the water. Paddling around a bend, you notice a blanket of white. As you get closer, this blanket transforms into thousands of white Cahaba lilies.

Typically six to nine fragrant white flowers are borne in a terminal cluster on a long stalk that equals or exceeds the basal leaves. Individual flowers which measure up to 6in (15cm) in diameter, open consecutively and last only one day.

The Cahaba stands out as the longest, essentially free-flowing river in Alabama, and most of its course is navigable by canoe at some time of the year.

Cahaba's Treasure
Every May the Cahaba Lily blooms on the beautiful Cahaba River. The lily hides beneath the rushing river in the crevices of the limestone rocks, then burst into bloom in May for all to see.  The flower is stunning and rare. On the last Saturday in May people who love the lily make the journey to the Cahaba River to view Cahaba's Treasure.

Found only in Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina; the Cahaba Lily requires swift current and direct sunlight to flourish.
