FACILITIES

The Samford Sciencenter

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is housed in the Samford Sciencenter, a 96,000-sq. ft. educational facility completed in 2001 to emphasize inquiry-based learning with group work and hands-on experimentation. The Sciencenter features a 2000-sq. ft. medicinal plant conservatory, a 100-seat planetarium with a Spitz projection system, a Foucault pendulum, research and teaching labs with modern instrumentation, and a computer laboratory with 44 computers. Specialized operational laboratories in the Sciencenter include a preparative HPLC/electrophoretic lab, a liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) lab, a scanning electron microscope lab, a water and environmental analytical lab, and a histological techniques lab.

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry

The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry resides on the third (top) floor of the Samford Sciencenter and occupies two 40-seat classrooms, five undergraduate teaching labs, a chemical instrumentation teaching/research lab, an LC-MS research lab, and four labs for faculty/student research. Two of the five undergraduate teachings labs are used primarily for organic chemistry, and each of these is fitted with a dozen fume hoods - one for each pair of students. The chemical instrumentation teaching/research lab is found at a point that is central to the two organic labs so that students can easily gain access to the research equipment to perform chemical analyses.

Each faculty research lab contains two lab benches, two large fume hoods, and enough desk space to accommodate three students. Scientific research instrumentation currently housed in the department include:

ThermoElectron LCQ Deca XP MAX LC-MS
Thermo-Finnigan MAT GCQ GC-MS
Cary 50 Bio UV-vis spectrophotomer
Cary Eclipse fluorescence spectrophotometer
Perkin-Elmer Paragon 1000PC FT-IR spectrometer
Anasazi Instruments EFT-60 NMR spectrometer
Buck Scientific Accusys 211 atomic absorption spectrometer (with a 220-GF graphite furnace and laminar flow burner)
Buck Scientific Model 310 gas chromatograph (4)
Varian 2510 gradient HPLC with UV detector
CH Instruments Model 620A (CHI620A) electrochemical workstation
LabConCo controlled atmosphere glovebox
