Dr. Fisk earned her B.A. from Samford in 1977, her M.A. from Duke University, followed by a Ph.D. in English from Rice University in 1984. Her specialty of 19th-century American literature includes Nathaniel Hawthorne and also the slave narratives. Besides general American literature courses, she coordinated and developed the interdisciplinary freshman core course, Cultural Perspectives, and co-edited the two-volume anthology of readings. In May 2004 she was voted Outstanding Honors Professor of the Year by students in the Honors program. On the national level she serves on the Executive Board as Secretary to the Nathaniel Hawthorne Society and will coordinate the July 2006 conference at the Rothemere Institute, Oxford, UK.
