Submissions for Colonial Dames Papers

Each year Birmingham's chapter of the Colonial Dames of America graciously sponsors a series of prizes awarded to papers in early American history. All Samford students are invited and encouraged to participate. These are cash prizes, intended to reward and encourage the study of early American history.

The term "early American history" usually means the colonial, revolutionary, and early republic eras. Papers on British, French, or Spanish colonialism in North America are welcome, as are papers on indigenous cultures. If you have doubts about the relevancy of your topic, check with the department chair.

Papers typically will be revisions of work done in class. Pay close attention to the corrections and remarks offered by your instructor. Submit a paper regardless of the classroom grade. The winners are chosen strictly from among those submitted, and the class grade is not a factor (and is not even known to the readers, since you must submit a clean copy.)

Papers should be in Times New Roman font, 12-point, double-spaced. Minimum length is ten (10) pages.

Use good paper. No xerox copies.

Use Chicago Manual (Turabian) for footnote style.

The deadline for submissions is February 1, 2009, in the History office.
