SCHOLARSHIPS: Students in History

The Department of History awards a limited number of Scholarships to students majoring (first major) in History. Decisions for Scholarships are normally made in April for the following academic year by a department scholarship selection committee. Students interested in applying for a scholarship must submit an application no later than April 2 for committee consideration. Scholarships are for one academic year and are not automatically renewable. Recipients must submit a new application for each year. While most of our scholarship money is awarded to students who are enrolled at Samford at the time of application, some money is available for incoming Freshmen or transfer students. Applications can be obtained from the department secretary.

Currently we have three types of scholarships available:

NON-ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIPS: From money allocated to the department each year as part of the annual budgetary process. These scholarships are awarded primarily on the basis of academic performance. However, the committee does take “need” into consideration in selecting recipients.

GEORGE V. IRONS ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP: These scholarships are awarded in honor of the late Distinguished Professor of History Dr. George V. Irons from earnings of a generous bequest of the late Stanley Brooks Russell, Class of 1928, and additional endowment gifts by other friends of Dr. Irons. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of need and academic qualifications with “need” being the primary determinant. Needs are assessed by the Department Scholarship Committee from information provided by the application and/or from the “needs analysis” form filed with the University.

NANCY C. LIPHAM SCHOLARSHIP FUND: The Nancy Lipham scholarship fund was established by alumna, Nancy C. Lipham, AB History 1976. Annual income produced by the fund is used to underwrite annual scholarships for undergraduate History majors. The committee will award these scholarships on the basis of academic and financial need with financial need given the greater weight.

HOW TO APPLY: Currently enrolled majors should pick up an application from the department secretary in the spring of each year and return the application no later than May 5, 2009 to Dr. Jonathan Bass, DBH 322, phone (205) 726-4133. In addition to annual scholarships, money does sometimes become available during the academic year. Therefore students having special needs anytime during the year should contact Dr. Bass to ascertain the possibility of financial help. Entering Freshmen should write to the Chair, Department of History and obtain an application. To receive consideration a Freshman must have been accepted for enrollment and have declared a major in History.
