National Broadcast Society (NBS)

The National Broadcast Society is a national organization of journalism students with chapters at 85 universities and high schools.

NBS began nationally in 1940. The Samford chapter originated eight years ago and continues to grow. Currently there are eight members.

The purpose of NBS is to encourage and reward scholarship and accomplishment among student broadcasters, to establish communication between student and professional broadcasters and foster integrity in the use of the powerful instruments of radio, television, film and cable.

Members meet once a month to hear speakers from local media outlets in television and radio. Many of these visitors are graduates of the Samford JMC department. Former speakers include NBC 13 Assistant News Director, Fox sports announcer Rick Karle and Fox Meteorologist Fred Hunter.

Any Samford student is invited to join. It is a $50 fee for the year. “Being a part of NBS is a great way to gain experience. You become involved on campus, meet people with the same interests and it looks good on a resume,” Samford NBS President Jenna Deery said.
