A Message from the Dean Welcome to Samford! If you’re a student considering your college
choices, let me give you a few reasons to consider majoring in one of
the many subjects offered in the Howard College of Arts and Sciences:
• An emphasis on lasting value
Students are sometimes attracted to “fad” courses and “practical
degrees.” Neither of these has much lasting value. A course in
“Ghouls and Vampires” or “Working with Windows XP”
may sound trendy now, but in ten years it will be an embarrassment.
At Samford our emphasis is on those ideas that have stood the test of
time. • A personal connection with your professors
At many large universities you’ll be crowded into mass lecture
halls with professors who will never know your name. At Samford, you
are guaranteed to have small classes where you’ll get to know
your professors and make friends with other students. • The benefits of a comprehensive university
Some liberal arts colleges are quite limited in their outlook. Samford
has the benefits of a mid-size university—Division I athletics,
cultural events, outstanding guest speakers—without the anonymity
of a large state university. You’ll also have access to the resources
of our professional schools: business, divinity, education, law, nursing,
performing arts, and pharmacy. It’s really the best of both worlds. • An emphasis on enduring values
In a time when our country has been torn by greed and scandal, it’s
good to know that some schools still insist on a code of values. Samford
strives to uphold five core values: worth of the individual, self-discipline,
integrity, respect for property and the environment, and respect for
community authority. These values are not simply given lip service,
but are reinforced through learning, living, and worshiping together. • An ideal environment for studying and living
Samford’s campus is one of the most beautiful in the South. Georgian
colonial buildings encircle the beautifully landscaped quadrangle. The
campus has the charm of a secluded retreat but is located within minutes
of the city of Birmingham with its outstanding healthcare, restaurants,
and cultural activities. We encourage you to browse through the departmental websites. If you
have questions, you can contact our faculty through email or telephone.
Then we encourage you to take the next step and come to visit our campus
and meet our faculty in person. I think you will find that Samford is
a very special place. David W. Chapman
