Program and Requirements
Psychology Major Requirements A major in Psychology requires a minimum of 40 credits according to the following requirements: 1) Fundamental Knowledge and Skills. The following three courses (12 credits) are required of all majors:
2) Human Development and Interaction. Two courses (8 credits) are required from among the following:
3) Experimental Psychology. Two courses (8 credits) required from among the following:
4) Electives. Two courses (8 credits) required from among the following:
Any of the courses listed under Sections 2 or 3 above not taken to fulfill a requirement may also count as electives with one restriction. Students may use either Psyc 205 Lifespan Development or Psyc 210 Child and Adolescent Psychology to count toward the major or minor, but they cannot use both courses to fulfill the major or minor requirements. Psyc 411 Special Topics in Psychology may be taken more than once for elective credit if the topics are different. Permission to count different sections of Psyc 411 for elective credit should be obtained from the Department Chair. Elective courses are not offered on a regular annual basis, but are taught as student interest dictates and faculty resources allow. 5) Capstone Experience. One course (4 credits) required from among the following:
The actual courses taken should be selected in conjunction with an advisor and in accordance to the student's interests and career goals. For students who intend to pursue graduate study and a career in psychology or a related area, taking Psyc 301 Internship and/or Psyc 401 Journal Seminar is recommended for career exploration, to gain pre-professional experience, and to prepare for graduate study. Psyc 301 Internship and Psyc 401 Journal Seminar may be taken on a pass/fail basis only, and do not count toward the major or minor. The Psychology major does not require a minor in any other discipline; however, students are encouraged to select courses which will complement their interests and their educational and career goals in consultation with a faculty advisor.
