Internships

An often asked question is, What can I do with a major in sociology? The internship experience helps you answer that question. Many of the persons who supervise our majors in internships were themselves sociology majors as undergraduates. The internship is an opportunity to gain valuable experience. It involves working at a community agency or organization, applying your knowledge as a sociology major and earning 4 credits in sociology. It has both academic and practical rewards. You will have the opportunity to see first hand the ideas and theories that you have studied in class, apply some of these understandings to your work in the organization and gain valuable work experience. The basic requirements are to complete 90 hours of supervised work, attend several meetings with the internship coordinator and complete a written project. Places you might complete an internship include agencies involved with aging, health, youth, family services, mental health, probation and parole, religion, business and urban planning.
