Sociology majors are expected to learn research skills by working with faculty and other students. Some of our recent majors have prepared and presented research on the Samford campus at the Samford Showcase as well as off-campus at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research and the Southern Sociological Society. Several students who have recently done research presentations are Elizabeth Redding, Ann Marie Kinman, Tania Henson and Stephanie Hall.

Paper titles include:

"Factors Limiting the Effect of Education on Prejudice" - Tania Henson

"Gender Differences in Depression Religiosity, and Social Support in a College Population" - Stephanie Hall and Anne Marie Kinman

"Secular verses Religious Venues of Work for Women: an examination of perceived legitimacy for women working in a "man's world" - Elizabeth Redding

Ashley Sharpe, a sociology major, was awarded a Samford Undergraduate Research Scholar stipend for the summer 2005. She worked with Dr. Hugh Floyd on research related to pro-social behavior patterns of middle school youth. It was anticipated that her work would produce a research paper which she would be able to present at a professional sociology meeting in the coming academic year.

Sociology majors participate in the National Conference for Undergraduate Research

Jessica Grondin received first place recognition in the undergraduate research competition at the Mid-South Sociological Association meeting in Biloxi, MS, October 20-23, 2004. The title of her research paper was "Silent Screams: A Look at Social Control and the Relationship with Rape in Adolescence."
