The School:

Centro Lingüístico Conversa is a language school in San José, Costa Rica.  Founded in 1974, Conversa is dedicated to the teaching of Spanish and English as foreign languages.  The staff at Conversa has designed programs for several American university groups and utilizes a High Intensity Spanish Program, designed along Peace Corps training lines.

The Campus:

The campus, El Pedregal, is located on a hilltop about ten miles west of San José in the town of Santa Ana. It has a dining hall, a lounge, sixteen classrooms (twelve indoors and four outdoors), two lodges, a volleyball court, a basketball court, a tennis backboard, ping pong tables, a bathhouse (solar-heated showers), two meeting rooms (TV and VCR), and lots of hammocks.  Spectacular views, fresh air, and abundant tropical fruits provide an ideal environment for intensive language study.

The Total Immersion Program, Jan term:

Five and a half hours of Spanish classes daily

Small groups - maximum 4 students

Mid-week grammar review lectures in English

Highly experienced native language instructors

Daily contact with bilingual program coordinators

Program supervised by professional linguist

Daily breakfast and lunch with the staff

Home stay and meals with a Costa Rican family (only one student per family)

Optional field trips with class and instructors

Conversa's programs have been approved by the College Consortium for International Studies (C.C.I.S.).  Students who desire university credit should apply through Language Study Abroad office of the Department of World Languages and Cultures of Samford Univeristy.  Group programs accompanied by Samford faculty are offered during Jan term and individual study programs can be arranged for other times.
