Senior Project

Spring 2000


COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A research and writing project designed to synthesize skills acquired and deepen knowledge gained in previous course work. This project will constitute the "capstone" experience for undergraduate language majors and can be presented to prospective employers or graduate programs as part of a portfolio.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

To develop research and writing skills in the target language
To utilize students’ creative abilities
To demonstrate oral presentation skills
To synthesize prior coursework and locate its place in a chronological overview of Hispanic literature
To categorize and summarize specific literary works within a framework of general movements and trends in both Hispanic and World literature

COURSE CONTENT:

The study of a chronological overview of Hispanic literature to include literary movements and major authors
The writing of the results of a focused research project of the student's choice, under the advisement of the mentoring professor< The oral presentation of these results to faculty members, outside reviewers, and student colleagues
Presentation of the project at the Senior Showcase.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EVALUATION:

Two chronological outlines of literary movements and major authors, one on Peninsular literature and the other on Latin American literature. Based on texts and lectures
Written projects will be read by mentor and two off-campus scholar-reviewers.
Results of the written project will be presented orally to the Spanish faculty and outside reviewers, pending availability.
Attendance at all mentoring sessions, student presentations and seminar sessions as well as meeting all deadlines as outlined in the programa is required. Failure to meet these requirements will result in a grade penalty or a failing grade for the course.

COURSE GRADE:

Class presentation, participation, quizzes - 25%
Outlines - 10%
Oral presentations - 10%
Outside evaluations of project - 30%
Mentor’s evaluation of project - 25%
