Course 10 Schedule

The musically-inclined Ed Howell Course 10:
Irish Genealogical Research

This course is for family historians eager to pursue a coordinated approach to Irish research.

Faculty:

Textbooks:
  1. Required:
    • Raymond, Stuart A. Irish Family History on the Web. 2nd edition. Bury, Lancashire, England: Federation of Family History Societies, 2004.
    • Grenham, John. Tracing Your Irish Ancestors - The Complete Guide. 3rd edition. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company, 2006.

  2. Recommended for those who plan to visit Ireland:
    • Bynre, Joseph. Byrne's Dictionary of Irish Local History. Douglas Village, Cork: Mercier Press, 2004.
    • Helferty, Seamus and Raymond Refausse. Directory of Irish Archives. 4th edition. Dublin: Four Courts Press, 2003.

Requisites: There are no prerequisites that would prohibit you taking this course, however, the instructor does advise that you have a sound understanding of North American research (U.S. and Canada depending on the problem you are trying to solve) and it is most helpful if you have identified at least a county in Ireland where your ancestors are from -- if not, there are sessions during the course to help with the identification of the place of nativity for your ancestor. There is also an emphasis on preparing you to go to Ireland to conduct researc if you are ever able to do so.
