Lecturer: Courses 2,3,5,Evening Sessions
Ms. Bettag is a professional genealogist based in Washington D.C.; certified since 1997. Her research focuses on French
and Acadian families of Louisiana, her native state. She conducts research in Washington (Library of Congress, National
Archives, DAR Library); in Louisiana (courthouses, archives and other repositories); in Salt Lake City (FHL) and in France.
She has also researched in Spain, England and Canada. In addition to her teaching at I.G.H.R., her lecture and teaching
venues include the National Archives, the National Institute for Genealogical Research (N.I.G.R., for which she serves
as director), FGS /NGS national conferences, and local / regional genealogical events.
A contributing author to Professional Genealogy, she has also written for the National Genealogical
Society Quarterly, APG Quarterly, and other publications. She is a past winner of the NGSQ "Award for Excellence"
for a published article. Current positions: Trustee, Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG); Director,
National Institute on Genealogical Research (N.I.G.R.). Formerly she was Co-editor, NGS Quarterly,
a director of APG, and a director of NGS. Academic: B.A. (French; Spanish minor), University of Southwestern
Louisiana; Fulbright Fellow, University of Toulouse, France; M.A. (French; Woodrow Wilson Fellow), Columbia University.
