Sharon Batiste Gillins is a native of Galveston, Texas with paternal ancestral roots in St. Mary Parish,
Louisiana and maternal roots in Ft. Bend County, Texas. She nurtures a life-long interest in family history
research and has been actively researching African American family history for over ten years.
While researching her own family, she developed an in interest in Louisiana's unique record systems and learned
to analyze a variety of record types for vital information on slave ancestors; she regularly shares that information
with other researches through presentations at genealogy conferences and workshops.
She is a member of the San Diego African American Genealogy and Research Group and credits members of this close-knit
group for their inspiration, support and research guidance through the years.
Mrs. Gillins is a graduate of Howard University, with an MS in Educational Technology from the University of the
District of Columbia. She is an Associate Professor at Riverside Community College, Riverside, California,
where she has taught for 14 years.
