Tim Pinnick

Portrait of Tim Pinnick

Lecturer: Course 11


Tim Pinnick is a researcher and writer with more than 20 years overall research experience including all the major U.S. repositories. In 2007 he authored his first book, "Finding and Using African American Newspapers" (Gregath Publishing). Having spent 10 years as a public school teacher, Tim brings a wealth of teaching experience to the course.

As an independent scholar, Tim has presented several papers on African American related subjects. The most recent one, African Americans and the Grand Army of the Republic in Illinois was given at the 2006 Illinois History Conference. He has extensive lecture experience on a variety of topics and has been a presenter at over a dozen national and regional genealogy conferences coast to coast.

His awards include a 2005-2006 Formby Research Fellowship and a 2005 Richard S. Brownlee Fund grant to conduct research on African American coal miners in Texas and Missouri.

The former Illinois state high school track and field champion and 1980 Olympic Trials qualifier in the long jump, currently divides his time between researching and coaching the sprinters and jumpers of the Downers Grove South girls track team in the western suburbs of Chicago.
